Algebra Tutors

We developed our algebra tutoring program because family after family kept coming to us explaining the difficulty that their children were having in algebra. We know how hard the class can be. We’ve heard about the failing grades. Students not understanding. And we’ve also seen the improvement when students start to “get it.” We like to take a multi-medium approach to tutoring algebra. First, we’ve realized that reliance on textbooks as the sole source of home instruction is a strongly limiting factor for students’ understanding. We like to incorporate videos, live instruction, problem-solving, reasoning and analysis. The goal is to understand algebra on a deeper level. To learn why things work. Because deep understanding makes learning both more fun and more efficient.

Our experienced algebra tutors help students master the fundamentals of equations and develop all the skills they need to excel in algebra. We help with Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, as well as advanced Algebra. We help students with math placement tests for Portland grade schools and high schools as well as standardized exams, class tests, and quizzes.

Our algebra tutors all believe that tutoring make the grade. All of our tutors are hand-selected. They are either a college graduate or currently working on their degree—that’s the first requirement we have. We then asses their character. Are they honest? Do they have integrity? These are the fundamental values we look for. If prospective algebra tutors don’t have integrity, we don’t hire them. We carefully search their transcript to look for high grades in college-level math and science courses. If these grades check out, they move on to the next step.

One of the biggest steps in our hiring process is that all prospective algebra tutors tutor Eric first. (Eric is getting pretty good at algebra by now!) They take Eric through a real-live tutoring session. And Eric asses their ability to teach, their knowledge of the topic itself, and their character. He also looks for passion. We like to hire tutors who aren’t in it for a paycheck. We look for algebra tutors who are passionate about math and helping people. That’s the Tutor Portland difference. Learn more About Us
