Portland Public Schools Math Curriculum: What Parents Need to Know

If your child attends a Portland Public Schools middle or high school, you’ve probably wondered what they’re actually learning in math class. Maybe you’ve looked at their homework and thought “this doesn’t look like the math I learned.” Or maybe your student is struggling, and you’re not sure whether it’s the material, the teaching approach, or a gap from previous years.

Understanding what PPS teaches — and how they teach it — can help you support your student more effectively. As a tutor who works with PPS students regularly, I’ve seen firsthand where the curriculum works well and where students tend to fall behind. Here’s what you need to know.

What the PPS Math Curriculum Looks Like in Middle School

Middle school math in PPS covers grades 6 through 8. These three years build the foundation for everything that comes in high school. As a result, gaps that form here tend to compound quickly once the material gets more advanced.

What They’re Using

PPS middle schools adopted a curriculum called MidSchoolMath starting in the 2022-23 school year. This curriculum emphasizes building conceptual understanding by introducing every lesson in a real-world context. Each lesson cycle covers a single standard and spans an entire week. That slower, deeper pace gives students time to genuinely understand each concept before moving on.

All PPS middle school math courses align with Common Core State Standards and Oregon Math Standards. If the homework looks different from what you remember, that’s part of why. The emphasis has shifted from memorizing procedures to understanding why those procedures work.

The Compacted Math Track

PPS also offers a Compacted Math pathway for advanced students. This accelerated track covers more material in less time. Students who complete Compacted Math Year 1 and demonstrate proficiency can advance into Algebra 1-2 before high school.

However, the compacted track isn’t automatically the right choice for every strong math student. I’ve worked with students who were placed into compacted courses before they were fully ready. In those cases, the pace creates stress rather than enrichment. If your student is considering this track, make sure their foundation is genuinely solid first.

What Each Grade Covers

In 6th grade, students work with ratios, fractions, division, and introductory algebraic expressions. They also begin reasoning about equations and relationships between variables.

7th grade moves into proportional relationships, operations with rational numbers, and generating equivalent expressions. Students also start working with geometry concepts like area, surface area, and volume.

8th grade is where things shift significantly. Students encounter linear equations, functions, the Pythagorean Theorem, and systems of equations. For many students, this is the first time math feels genuinely abstract. The jump from 7th to 8th grade math is one of the biggest transitions in the entire K-12 sequence.

Where Middle Schoolers Struggle

The most common trouble spots I see in PPS middle school students are fractions, negative numbers, and the transition to algebraic thinking. Specifically, many students arrive in 7th or 8th grade without solid fluency in fraction operations. Because the curriculum moves steadily through these foundational skills, students who aren’t comfortable with them fall behind fast.

The shift from arithmetic to algebra in 8th grade is another major hurdle. Students go from working with concrete numbers to working with variables and abstractions. However, the difficulty usually isn’t about intelligence. It’s about readiness. Students who have strong number sense and fraction skills handle the transition much more smoothly.

High School Math Curriculum

PPS high schools follow a traditional course sequence. Understanding this path helps parents see where their student is headed and what each course demands.

The Standard Path

The typical path starts with Algebra 1-2 in 9th grade, followed by Geometry in 10th grade, and Advanced Algebra 3-4 (equivalent to Algebra 2) in 11th grade. After that, students can choose between Pre-Calculus, AP Statistics, or a course called FST (Functions, Statistics, and Trigonometry). The choice depends on the student’s goals and how they performed in Advanced Algebra.

Students who completed the Compacted Math track in middle school often start high school in Geometry. As a result, they can reach Pre-Calculus or AP Calculus by junior or senior year.

The Curriculum

PPS high schools adopted Illustrative Mathematics through McGraw Hill starting in the 2022-23 school year. This curriculum covers Algebra 1-2, Geometry, and Algebra 3-4. All courses align with Common Core State Standards. Illustrative Mathematics emphasizes conceptual understanding and real-world application alongside procedural skills. Students are expected to explain their reasoning, work collaboratively, and connect math to practical contexts.

Where High Schoolers Struggle

At the high school level, the most common struggles fall into a few predictable categories.

Algebra 1-2 is where many students first encounter serious difficulty. The course assumes fluency with integers, fractions, and basic equation-solving from middle school. Students who arrive with gaps in those areas find themselves trying to learn new material and catch up on old material simultaneously. That’s an exhausting position, and it often leads to declining grades.

Geometry trips up students who are strong in algebra but weaker in spatial reasoning and logic. The course requires a different kind of thinking — proofs, visual reasoning, and connecting properties to shapes. For students who thrived in algebra because it was procedural, geometry can feel like a completely different subject.

Advanced Algebra 3-4 is where the curriculum gets significantly more abstract. Students work with polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and rational functions. They also encounter complex numbers, sequences, and series. This is the course where I see the most students reach out for tutoring. The pace and complexity both increase at the same time.

How the Curriculum Has Changed

The curricula PPS uses — MidSchoolMath in middle school and Illustrative Mathematics in high school — share a common philosophy that’s worth understanding as a parent. The approach differs from how most of us were taught. Knowing what to expect can reduce confusion at home.

Conceptual Understanding Over Memorization

Both curricula emphasize understanding why a procedure works, not just memorizing the steps. Students are expected to explain their reasoning, work with classmates, and apply math to real-world scenarios. As a result, your student’s math class probably involves more group work, discussion, and written explanations than yours did.

Instead of 30 repetitive practice problems, your student might have fewer problems that require deeper thinking. MidSchoolMath in particular introduces every lesson through a real-world scenario. This helps students connect the math to practical situations before diving into abstract procedures.

What This Means for Parents

If your child asks for homework help and you try to show them a shortcut you remember, you might accidentally create confusion. The curriculum builds understanding in a specific sequence. Therefore, if you want to help, ask your student to show you how their teacher approached the problem before offering your own method.

This emphasis on understanding over memorization can produce stronger math students in the long run. However, it does mean that the gap between what parents remember and what students are learning is wider than it used to be. Don’t let that gap discourage you from staying involved. Your presence and support still matter, even when the methods look unfamiliar.

How to Support Your Student in the PPS Math Curriculum

Understanding the curriculum is the first step. Here are a few practical ways to help based on what I’ve seen work with PPS families.

Stay Aware of Pacing

PPS courses move at a consistent pace. Falling behind by even a week can create problems. Check in regularly with your student about where they are in the course. Ask them if anything from the current unit feels confusing. Early conversations prevent small gaps from becoming big ones.

Use the Resources Available

Khan Academy provides free video explanations that align well with the Common Core standards PPS follows. In addition, the PPS website at pps.net offers information about curriculum and pacing for both middle school and high school math. These tools can help you understand what your student is working on even if the material looks unfamiliar.

Watch for the Transition Points

The biggest risk points in the PPS math curriculum are the transitions between courses. Moving from 8th grade to Algebra 1, from Algebra 1 to Geometry, and from Geometry to Advanced Algebra each require skills from the previous course. If your student struggled at the end of one course, don’t assume they’ll be fine at the start of the next one. Instead, use the summer to review and shore up weak areas before the new course begins.

Get Help Early

If your student is falling behind in any PPS math course, acting early makes a significant difference. Small gaps are straightforward to fix. However, accumulated gaps across multiple units or courses take much longer to untangle.

Back to School: Getting Your Math Skills Sharp Again

The last week of summer has a specific feeling to it. The days are still long and warm, but there’s a shift in the air. School is coming. For a lot of students, that means a quiet anxiety starts building — especially around math.

I see this every year in Portland. Students walk into their first tutoring session of the fall and say some version of the same thing: “I forgot everything.” They didn’t actually forget everything. But after two or three months away from math, the rust is real. Procedures that felt automatic in June now take twice as long. Vocabulary that was second nature feels vaguely familiar at best.

The good news is that shaking off the rust doesn’t take as long as most students think. However, it does take some intentional effort in the weeks before school starts. Here’s how to make that transition smoother — both mentally and academically.

The Rust Is Normal

Before we get into strategies, I want to say something directly to parents. If your student seems to have forgotten a lot of math over the summer, don’t panic. This is completely normal.

Why It Happens

Research consistently shows that students lose roughly two to three months of math skills over summer break. The brain prioritizes the information it uses regularly. When a student spends ten weeks without touching algebra, the brain files those skills away as low priority. As a result, retrieval slows down.

It Comes Back Faster Than You Think

The important thing to understand is that the knowledge isn’t gone. It’s just buried. With a little focused review, most students can recover their skills much faster than it took to learn them originally. Relearning is always quicker than learning from scratch. That’s encouraging, and it’s worth sharing with your student if they’re feeling anxious about the new school year.

Start Two Weeks Before Back to School

The single most effective thing a student can do is start reviewing math before the first day of class. Even a small head start makes a meaningful difference.

The Two-Week Window

I recommend starting about two weeks before school begins. That gives students enough time to shake off the rust without turning the end of summer into a grind. Two weeks of light, focused review is plenty for most students.

What to Review

Focus on the course your student just finished, not the one they’re about to start. For example, if they completed Algebra 1 last year and are heading into Geometry, spend these two weeks reviewing Algebra 1 concepts. The new course will introduce new material on day one. However, that material will assume the previous course is still fresh.

Specifically, I recommend pulling out last year’s textbook or notes and working through chapter review problems. Focus on the topics from the second half of the year, since those had the least time to solidify before summer started. Khan Academy is another great free option for targeted review organized by topic.

How Much Time

Fifteen to twenty minutes a day is enough. That’s a small commitment, but it adds up to over three hours of review across two weeks. Furthermore, short daily sessions are more effective than one long cramming session because they give the brain time to consolidate between sessions.

Get the Mindset Right

The academic review matters. But the mental and emotional transition back to school mode matters just as much. A student who walks into the first day feeling prepared and confident will perform differently than one who walks in feeling anxious and behind.

Reframe the Narrative

A lot of students carry a story about themselves and math that sounds like “I’m not good at this.” That story tends to get louder during the back-to-school transition because the anxiety amplifies it. As a parent, you can help by reframing the narrative before school starts.

Instead of asking “are you worried about math this year?” try something like “what’s one thing you felt good about in math last year?” That question shifts the focus from fear to competence. It reminds the student that they’ve succeeded before, which makes the idea of succeeding again feel more realistic.

Normalize the Adjustment Period

Let your student know that the first few weeks of school are an adjustment for everyone. Teachers expect students to be rusty. In fact, most math teachers build review into the first two to three weeks of the school year specifically because they know students will need it.

Knowing this can take a lot of pressure off. Your student doesn’t need to walk in on day one performing at the level they were at in May. They just need to walk in willing to engage. The rest comes back with practice.

Set Up Systems Before Your Student Goes Back to School

The students who do best in math aren’t always the ones with the most natural ability. More often, they’re the ones with the best systems and routines. Back-to-school season is the perfect time to build those systems before the workload kicks in.

The Homework Routine

Establish a consistent homework time and location before the first assignment arrives. Doing homework at the same time each day, in the same place, with distractions minimized, reduces the friction of getting started. That friction is often the hardest part, especially for students who struggle with math.

The Materials

Make sure your student has the supplies they need before school starts. A dedicated math notebook, a good calculator if their course requires one, and a folder for returned tests and quizzes. Keeping old tests is important because they’re one of the best study tools available. I tell my students to save every graded test. Those mistakes are a roadmap showing exactly what to review before the next exam.

The Phone

This one is simple but important. Phones should not be on the table during homework or study time. Even having a phone visible reduces cognitive performance, according to research. Encourage your student to put the phone in another room or face-down in a bag. That single habit can improve the quality of their study time significantly.

Know When to Ask for Help Early

One of the biggest mistakes I see families make is waiting too long to get help. A student struggles for a few weeks, then a few months, and by the time they reach out for tutoring, the gaps have compounded. The material has moved on, and now they’re trying to learn new concepts while simultaneously catching up on old ones.

The Early Warning Signs

If your student is struggling consistently in the first three to four weeks of school, that’s a signal worth acting on. Similarly, if homework is taking significantly longer than it should, or if your student is expressing frustration or dread about math class, don’t wait for the first report card to take action.

Why Early Intervention Works

Small gaps are easy to fix. A student who’s confused about one concept from last year can usually get caught up in a few sessions. However, a student who’s been struggling for months has multiple overlapping gaps that take much longer to untangle. Early intervention saves time, money, and frustration.

We identify the gap, address it directly, and send them back to class ready to keep up. That kind of targeted, early support can change the entire trajectory of the school year.

Make It a Fresh Start

Back-to-school season is genuinely a reset. Whatever happened last year — good or bad — doesn’t have to define this year. A student who struggled in 7th-grade math can have a completely different experience in 8th grade with the right support and the right mindset.

I’ve seen this happen more times than I can count. A student walks in convinced they’re terrible at math. We find the gap. We fill it. And suddenly, the subject that felt impossible starts making sense. That moment when a student says “oh, I actually get this” is one of the best parts of my job.

Help your student see this year as a fresh opportunity. Encourage them to start their review early, set up good systems, and ask for help the moment they need it rather than waiting until they’re drowning. Those three habits alone can make this their best math year yet.
